of the Greater Peninsula
August 3, 2014
Dear Person of Influence,
Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula is planning its 9th Annual People of Influence Fundraising Gala, Friday, December 5, 2014 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, Hampton, Virginia. The funds raised will ensure that youth in our community will receive valuable national research based programs that will inspire them to become strong, smart, and bold adults.
No stranger to television, Sheryl Lee Ralph can currently be seen on Nickelodeon’s new series “Instant Mom”, Showtime’s “Ray Donovan”, and Bounce TV’s “One Love”. Sheryl Lee’s TV credits include “It’s a Living,” “Designing Women,” and most notably, “Moesha” for which TV Guide named her one of TV’s best Mom’s and was nominated for seven Image Awards. OWN’s “Where Are They Now” and TV One’s “Life After” have documented and provided insight about Sheryl Lee’s career. Sheryl Lee Ralph is a passionate AIDS activist and founding Director of the DIVA Foundation.
A portion of the funds raised will benefit the Honorable Norma Jean Harris Program Scholarship. Norma Jean Harris, former Girls Inc Board Chair, was the first female African American Magistrate for the City of Hampton. After her sudden death in April 2014, the scholarship was established in her memory to honor her commitment to Girls Inc and the education of youth in Hampton Roads. Her work in the Judicial System prompted her to advocate for children’s academic success as a way to ensure their non-involvment with the Juvenile Justice System. The scholarship will be used to fund summer camp tuition for needy families.
The purpose of this event is to raise $100,000.00 to support Girls Inc. programs in your community! Currently Girls Inc. provides safe learning environments for over 500 youth daily within the walls our four (4) campuses in Hampton, Newport News and Southside. Before and after school hours, Girls Inc. transports youth from 20 schools in Hampton, 15 schools in Newport News and 8 schools on the South Side to Girls Inc. campuses. Youth participate in programs that enhance their critical thinking and decision-‐making skills. Breakfast and dinner are served daily. In addition, Girls Inc. also offer summer camps Monday-‐Friday during summer months from 6:00 AM -‐ 6:00 PM. Our programs and transportation prevents gang involvement as well as other risky behaviors thereby ensuring safe communities. Proceeds from the fundraising gala will allow Girls Inc. to continue offering Girls Incorporated’s national researched curriculums to youths, age 5-‐18 in the Hampton Roads communities. Funds will support the following:
- Programs curriculums and supplies
- Affordable programs that will allow ANY child to be in safe environments during out-‐of-‐school-‐time when they are more likely to get involve in risky behaviors and/or gangs.
- Transportation to transport children from schools to programming campuses.
- Staff development training to ensure that children are under the supervision of professionally trained adults.
- Program scholarships to offset cost of participation for families who have multiple children and from low-‐income families enabling them to attend at a reduce cost or free.
Raising funds in this uncertain economic environment is overwhelming for non-‐profits. Therefore, we ask that you support this event which will help youth and make an impact for positive change!
Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula is part of a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Girls Incorporated’s (formerly Girls Club of America) roots began in 1864 nationally and established on the Peninsula in 1945. Girls Inc has provided vital educational programs for hundreds of girls, particularly those in high-‐risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.
Girls Inc develops research-‐based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major programs address math and science, education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, and sports participation. The research-‐based informal educational programs are distributed to over 150 Girls Inc Affiliates (such as Girls Inc of the Greater Peninsula) throughout the United States and Canada.
Girls Inc is a nonprofit organization that receives its revenue from public support-‐corporations, foundations, government grants, and individuals. Over 80 percent of the organization’s functional expenses go directly to support program services for girls.
Girls Inc programming is offered anywhere girls are found, including Girls Inc outreach centers, schools, churches, community centers and housing projects. The majority of Girls Inc programming sites is located in low–income areas and provides a weekly average of 30 hours of after-‐school and summer activities.
Girls Inc informs policymakers about girls’ needs locally. The organization educates the community about critical issues facing girls. In addition, the organization teaches girls how to advocate for themselves and their communities, using their voices to promote positive change.
The Girls Inc of the Greater Peninsula Scholarship Program was created in 2005 to ensure that girls who might otherwise not participate in vital national research based programs are able to do so. Girls Inc. solicits funding so that girls from low-‐income families can participate at a reduced cost or at no cost. Program scholarships are offered annually to qualifying families.
