Hampton, VA— To support their ongoing mission of inspiring young girls to be strong, smart, and bold, Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula is hosting its 9th Annual People of Influence Fundraising Gala and has invited a strong, smart, and bold woman, Sheryl Lee Ralph, the distinguished stage, television, and film star as the guest speaker.

No stranger to television, Sheryl Lee Ralph can currently be seen on Nickelodeon’s new series “Instant Mom”, Showtime’s “Ray Donovan”, and Bounce TV’s “One Love”.  Sheryl Lee’s TV credits include “It’s a Living,” “Designing Women,” and most notably, “Moesha” for which TV Guide named her one of TV’s best Mom’s and was nominated for seven Image Awards.  OWN’s “Where Are They Now” and TV One’s “Life After” have documented and provided insight about Sheryl Lee’s career.  Sheryl Lee Ralph is a passionate AIDS activist and founding Director of the DIVA Foundation.

The annual event has proven to be the largest fundraising initiative for Girls Inc. who will use the proceeds to ensure that girls receive valuable research based programs.  For a small donation, Girls Inc. supporters will enjoy dinner, silent auction, book signing session and live entertainment on December 5, 2014 at 6:00p.m at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Norma Jean Scholarship PhotoA portion of the funds raised will benefit the Honorable Norma Jean Harris Program Scholarship.  Norma Jean Harris, former Girls Inc Board Chair, was the first female African American Magistrate for the City of Hampton.  After her sudden death in April 2014, the scholarship was established in her memory to honor her commitment to Girls Inc and the education of youth in Hampton Roads.  Her work in the Judicial System prompted her to advocate for children’s academic success as a way to ensure their non-involvment with the Juvenile Justice System.  The scholarship will be used to fund summer camp tuition for needy families.

Girls Inc. programs empower girls and young women by enabling them to learn new information, acquire and develop life skills, build self-confidence and have fun doing so. Girls Inc. hopes to significantly expand the number of girls served in the community while increasing their overall visibility.
